Winter Break Homework
Reading - All students should take Accelerated Reader quizzes on books they have completed this academic year. Here is the link: https://hosted110.renlearn.com/306110/
Usernames are typically the first initial of the student's first name and the last name. All passwords are password (not case sensitive). If you have trouble logging in or your student is locked, please email me. I will be checking [email protected] over break.
Math - 5th and 6th graders are to complete one Saxon lesson. 4th graders are to look through their December HW folders and do all highlighted sections (those problems left incomplete or uncorrected).
That's all for now. I hope this helps!
Warmly,
Ms. Willa

We are excited to introduce a new math homework program for all 4th graders, which supports both Montessori and Arizona state standards by providing a bridge to abstraction. This program will replace the 4th graders' current Saxon math homework, so please have your child return the Saxon texbook and Solution Manual given to them at the beginning of the year. Your deposit will be refunded.
Today, all 4th graders will receive their new math homework packet to take home. The packet includes a letter from the school, table of contents, record sheet for concept understanding, ten lessons, and a solutions manual. The letter includes instructions for both students and parents; please read it together at home. We will share the letter with the students in school as well.
Our commitment to continuous improvement inspired us to collaborate as a community to create this homework program. We have high hopes for it supporting our 4th graders during their transition year to grow their confidence, independence, knowledge, and greatness.
I thank you in advance for your support and flexibility. As always, please email me if you have questions.
Peace, Love and Light,
Ms. Willa

The Saxon calendar shows when homework lessons are due and when students will take Saxon math tests in class. Please use the calendar to plan ahead if your child will be missing school for vacation or to plan around late night activities. We understand that sometimes, issues arise that are unplanned and your child might not be able to do homework. On those rare occasions, students would make up the lesson(s) over the weekend or we would come up with a plan to get them up to date (if there were many lessons that needed completion). Please encourage your child to plan ahead with their work and to share their (reasonable) solution with me.

Math homework begins tonight for the 4th graders and any student who still needs to complete the first 10 lessons of Saxon. Reading homework began for 5th and 6th graders (no reading log was sent home for tonight).
Here's the relevant info from the homework page of the parent orientation packet:
MATH: 4th graders and new Villa students will receive their Saxon textbooks August 13th, with Lesson 1 due Tuesday, August 14th. Fifth and sixth graders who completed the first 10 Saxon lessons over the summer will turn in Investigation 1 on Tuesday, August 28th. For each lesson, students will complete the following:
- Read the Lesson information (New Concepts, etc) and Examples.
- All of the Lesson Practice or lettered problems (a, b, c…).
- Half of the Written Practice or numbered problems (choose all the even or all the odd problems).
- Work should be organized, tidy, and show all solving steps.
- If a student misses a math homework assignment, he/she will receive a “No Homework” that will need a parent’s signature.
- After the third “No Homework”, the teacher will make a phone call to parents. At this point, we would love your support and/or input in setting up a plan if it is deemed necessary.
- If there are three more “No Homeworks” after this, a meeting will be scheduled with teacher, student and parent.
- Each time a student comes to school without an assignment completed, he/she will go to study hall during recess to complete it.
- The expectation is that the majority of the homework is a review of math concepts they have learned in class.
READING: Students are to read at least 20 minutes per night (no comic books or graphic novels unless teacher approved). Reading homework may include reading for research projects. Once a student completes a book, they will take an Accelerated Reader quiz, do a book report, present a book talk, or answer literature questions. Should the reading or assignments not be completed, students will work on them in study hall. If this is recurring, the teacher will contact the parent.
PARENT SIGNATURES: Both the reading log and math lesson should be reviewed by parents and signed after corrections are made by the student. Solutions Manuals will be provided for the Saxon math homework. Uncorrected homework can be worked on in study hall.
Summer 2018 Homework
Summer homework is due the first week of school. Students who have incomplete or missing homework will be given the opportunity to work on it during study hall. Depending on the amount of work a student needs to do, the summer hw might also be sent home as nightly homework, the progress of which will be checked daily.
The following handouts were given to students.

Homework updates
Reading - Students should continue to read about/research their Great Lives person. Rather than turning in a daily reading log, they can work on different parts of the Great Lives project. They should also finish reading their Ancient Civilization novel or stories if they haven't already done so. There is no daily check for the reading homework, so my classroom's teaching team will check in with students verbally and occasionally collect items as we get closer to due dates.
Math - Students who are finished with the Saxon review pages (test B versions) can return to completing regular Saxon lessons from the textbook.
March 2, 2018
Math - Saxon review sheets were sent home. They are the B versions of the students weekly tests. Some students received packets, others single pages. Only one review page (front and back) is to be completed over the weekend. You may check your child's work at home (please sign the HW if that is the case) or we will check it at school.
Reading - Students are to read about their Great Lives person and continue filling out their Research & Inquiry packets. They do not have to do a figurative language. If they brought their Ancient Civ. novel home, they can also continue reading that.

Students who have turned in their Great Lives letters and received approval for their Great Life choice will have 3-5 fact cards due daily (bibliography resource must be included). Students have practiced writing fact cards at school throughout the year and have received lessons. Resources to support the Great Lives project can be found on this website's "Resources" page.

Reading Log - Students currently have figurative language handouts. They are to identify, illustrate, and explain two pieces of figurative language from their nightly reading. Examples and definitions of types of figurative language were also handed out.
Saxon Math - Over three day weekends, students are expected to complete two Saxon lessons. Students who have been rewound to past lessons are to continue working forward, as the purpose of the rewind was more practice. They are not to jump ahead and skip any lessons.
6th grade project - Sixth graders begin presentations of their service projects and research topics on Tuesday, Jan 23rd. Parents are welcome to attend.

Reading homework - Book project packets were sent home today. For the month of December (a little less than three weeks of school), students will be making a Glossary and either a Setting Map or Main Character 3D Model. Details and scoring rubrics can be found in the packets sent home. Students are expected to turn in their progress on the Glossary each day (it does not need a parent signature).
Saxon homework - We are continuing apace, unless an adjusted homework plan has been sent home via the Communication Folder. I call these a Saxon Rewind. For a variety of reasons, students might need to rewind to do more practice and take more time to become proficient in certain math skills. This often results in students feeling more solid with their foundation skills, so they can build on those skills more successfully.

Reading Log - Version 1
This is the nightly reading log with which we began the year. It contains an information table that the students fill out about their book, time spent reading, pages read, date, etc. The focus of this reading log is to help the students with their spelling work by having them identify their spelling patterns and rules in their nightly reading. Additional reading logs are available in the classroom and students may resupply as they need.
Reading Log - Version 2
This is the nightly reading log that will be sent home Tues, Sept 26th. The front page contains an information table about the book and the back page contains the daily questions. Students should answer the questions with detail and support their answers using evidence from the text. There are different question for the different grade levels. Students may work at the level appropriate for them and I encourage them to challenge themselves with higher level questions and/or with the depth of their answers. Additional reading logs are available in the classroom and students may resupply as they need.

Saxon math homework - Thank you for supporting your child to regularly practice math skills at home. It seems like a small thing, but reviewing, checking, and signing the work, as well as giving your child empowering feedback, goes a long way towards building problem-solving perseverance (I think the word of the moment is "grit").
Reading Log - Reading homework has begun! Reading logs were sent home in Communication Folders last week. Students received a lesson on how to identify their spelling rules/patterns in their reading and record it on their reading logs. Please sign your child's reading log each night that they complete the work. They may work ahead in anticipation of those nights that they have late activities.
Typing - All students received their username and password to log into typing.com. We strongly encourage them to practice the touch typing program weekly.
